Shaftesbury is a market town with its origins from the 9th century. It is the only significant hilltop settlement in Dorset and overlooks the Blackmore Vale. It was built as a fortified settlement as a defence in the struggle with the Danish invaders. Shaftesbury Abbey was founded by King Alfred in 888 but destroyed in the Dissolution in 1539. Gold Hill, the steep cobbled street, is famous for its picturesque appearance, the view from which has been described as one of the most romantic sights in England and has become an icon of Dorset.
